This movie is genius. I also believe The Shape of Water" was based on this little indie flick.. Watch this one, which was released in 2015 and The Shape of Water released in 2018 and you will see what I mean. I think The Shape of Water actually suffers due to the addition of sex and violence in order to lengthen the movie as it derails the purity of the original statement.
"The Space Between Us" has imagery that has haunted me since the first time II watched it. It's a comment on men's drive to sacrifice anything and anyone for their own survival and benefit. And, the fact that they have created the majority of the problems they contend with in the first place. The lead characters, a maid and merman are both oppressed and powerless in the face of this drive, until the maid is willing to stand up and fight at great personal cost. The film also, communicates that we're all equally guilty of inflicting pain on others, if we stand back and watch another be destroyed because we're afraid of loosing our own position and/or the small pleasures we do possess.
It's the first small step of a movement yet unseen or recognized.
