The meditation on what it means for you to be yourself
25 November 2017
Jim and Andy was a fascinating documentary which discussed a very interesting concept of identity. It tells the story of Jim Carrey while playing the role of Andy Kaufman in the film: Man on the Moon. It was fascinating to see unfold as we follow Jim Carrey through this documentary.

Many lines from the interview with Jim really was relatable and thought provoking, the discussions on him losing his identity, and unable to be Jim again really puts lots of things in perspective for me, what makes me, me. What is to stop me from wholly becoming someone else, this is of course similar to the philosophical notion of the ship of Theseus and the philosophical discussions behind Truman Show and many of Carrey's films.

This film was a brilliant meditation of such philosophical concepts and an interesting and sympathetic experience peering into the mind of actors when they embody a role. There is another interesting point that stems from this idea, it is the fact that life is in and of itself a show, a performance, as Shakespeare quotes, "All the world's a stage." Jim Carrey's life and life experiences perfectly embodies and presents this notion and coming out of the documentary I think it was definitely inspiring and liberating. A brilliant watch.
