No Kidding (1928)
Billy Barty - the baby with a difference
19 November 2017
The description given here does not quite fit the short as it appears in the Comedy Capers series (as Bachelor Baby), yet, since it is a Snub and Fat film and involved the very particular talents of Billy Barty, is must surely be this film.

It is possible that scene involving the two men as handymen has been cut from the beginning but, since they appear homeless where this version starts but not destitute (they have a car), it would seem more probable that the beginning of the film involved their being evicted from a flat (probably the Super 8mm excerpt "Crazy Kitchen" where they are in a flat where no cooking is allowed but are caught by the landlady operating a complicated kind of secret kitchen).

The film starts in the Comedy Capers version with their sleeping in the park, where they are awakened by a policemen. They are not asked by a woman to mind her baby; they accidentally hijack the baby when its pram become attached to their car. Seeing that there is a baby who offering a prize, they decide to take it home but, first they need to find a home and apply to bachelor apartments where babies are not allowed (this would provide a pleasing symmetry if they had started out in apartments where cooking was not allowed) so they have to find some way of getting the baby past the landlord.

It is at this point that Billy Barty appears (as he baby). Seeing a tailors' shop, Snub has the improbable idea of dressing the baby up as an adult and, having entered the tailor's with what is a genuine baby, re-emerges with a dressed up Billy Barty, who has the singular specialism of being a child actor who was also a dwarf (he never grew beyond about three foot) an d could therefore play rather scary quasi-adult-seeming babies.

The "baby" causes the inevitable havoc until the parents turn up (with the police) to reclaim her offspring,
