Jane is asked to clear his former psychiatrist
17 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
When a neuroscientist is poisoned in front of a crowded lecture theatre his ex-wife, who is also his research partner is the prime suspect. As it happened at a State University the crime comes under the possible jurisdiction of the CBI; Jane asks Lisbon for them to take the case as the accused has contacted him… she was the psychiatrist who helped Jane after the murder of his wife and child. Jane is convinced she is innocent and it soon looks as if he must be right when a group of animal rights terrorists came responsibility and promise further attacks if the research, which involves animals, isn't halted… unfortunately this isn't a great lead as the group turns out to be one man and his cats! There are other possibilities though; especially when we learn the nature of the research being undertaken.

This was another solid episode; partly because of the enjoyable central mystery but also because we learn more about Jane's past. So often in fiction a character has suffered a loss at the hands of a killer but rarely do we see that it had a psychological effect other than creating a desire for revenge; here we see that Jane was driven almost to the point of suicide by what happened. The research being undertaken does look a bit sci-fi but the resolution explains it is a way that makes clear that it doesn't work as hoped… it also provides an excuse for a great finale where the killer is exposed. There are a good number of suspects and the identity of the killer is far from obvious… I certainly didn't suspect the person who is ultimately exposed! Overall an impressive episode.
