Different Brakhage, but not better
11 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"The Machine of Eden" is an 11-minute movie by Stan Brakhage and here he goes a bit away from his usual style. But sadly, the outcome is not better than his usual quality. Still camera shots make this one a film that would have been too long at three minutes even, let alone at over 10. It was nice to see him try something different, but i don't think he succeeded at all. If this had been made today, I could say maybe he was just experimenting and he may improve with years to come, but with Brakhage I know that he did not. Then again, it is all very subjective. Some (not many) people may actually enjoy his approach to the craft. I personally cannot find any artistic value in here. Not recommended. Major thumbs down.
