Shipwreck With Lions
16 February 2016
Kathlyn Williams and suite -- in one of a series of "Captain Kate" films -- is shipwrecked for a couple of years on the coast of Africa in this Selig Polyscope short.

It's a very pleasant short subject, even if nothing much happens in the way of plot details. Miss Williams gets to dress in a leopard skin and a macaw, with three lions stalking around. Selig was probably the most conservative of the Edison Trust Companies in terms of story telling. Its strengths lay in technical expertise; Selig's background lay in optical and photographic equipment and the staffers certainly understood how to frame and shoot a scene and allowed its actors to play simply and well, as they do here.

It's the first of the "Captain Kate" series I have seen, so it's impossible to comment meaningfully on it, other than its well-presented visuals, as well as an early role for Tom Mix.
