Locks (2009)
4/10
Simple story, not too interesting

Warning: Spoilers
"Locks" is a 6-minute short film from 6 years ago written and directed by Ryan Coogler. He is one of the fastest rising filmmakers right now, especially in terms of African Americans, and shot this little movie in his early 20s. We see a man walk through the streets and he has dreadlocks like many people he sees, the ones who struggle with police, a mother with her girl etc. Then he enters a barber shop and shortly afterward the locks are gone. In the end, we find out why he got rid off them. I must say the emotional impact intended by Coogler with the ending was not too great. It felt just included for the sake of it instead of telling a really authentic and moving story. And lets be honest, everything before the ending isn't particularly interesting either. I guess with Coogler's reputation now, he must have stepped things up a lot since then as this was really not a great short movie. Thumbs down.
