THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL (2015) *** Bel Powley, Kristen Wiig, Alexander Skarsgard, Christopher Meloni, Abby Wait, Madeleine Waters, Miranda Bailey, Austin Lyon, Quinn Nagle, John Parsons. Powley gives a remarkable performance as a San Franciscan 15 year old circa 1976 whose loss of her virginity also opens up her world to creativity, namely as an artist, as well as embarking in an illicit affair with her mother's lunkheaded beau (Skarsgard balancing the potentially skeevy with poignancy). Based on Phoebe Gloeckner, Marielle Heller's adaptation and gentle direction adds to the off-the-wall humor and bone deep emotions a teenager goes thru in general but specifically with Powley as her nerd in bloom it skyrockets with animation peppered thru out (ala R. Crumb's oeuvre including a funny giantess on the prowl sequence) and a flashback soundtrack right on key.
