They Nest (2000 TV Movie)
7/10
Above-average cheesy creature feature
10 June 2015
After a nervous breakdown, a troubled Boston doctor returns to his Maine hometown and discovers that an army of insects has infested the island forcing the locals to fight off the voracious creatures before they take out more of the population.

As far as creature features go, this one isn't all that bad. One of the better features here is the fact that there's a nice mystery built up in the beginning with the discovery of the bugs bringing this along nicely, as it starts off with slowly noticing them at first then moves up to causing freak accidents to them finally striking out and attacking, wisely doing animals first before turning to humans. By focusing the first half on trying to make sense of their sudden appearance and the mishaps alongside the grisly animal remains, it makes these early parts quite entertaining as it gradually becomes apparent, managing to keep some interest and excitement during these early scenes while making a nice mystery. As well, some of the encounters during that time are quite good, as the dinner discovery is a great shock moment, the bathtub one is pretty creepy at times and throws in some nudity to boot, and there's also the film's best scene, the attack on the hamster, taking place as a stalk-and-chase through the hamster's maze from the creature's point-of- view which is pretty tense, thrilling and original, featuring some great work to it. The last part that works is the film's action-packed last- half, which is really great and brings a lot into the film. It starts with the thrilling scenes inside the general store to help out a stricken victim to the full-on swarm descending on the population which generates a lot of great moments with the creatures swarming in on the townspeople and the great chase out to the dock, coupled with the suspenseful sequence in the barnyard with the transforming insects makes it quite exciting and thrilling. This one here wasn't that bad, and it did have a few problematic flaws. The main one in here is that, since so long is taken up with the storyline about building up the bug threat, it takes a while to get going. The few isolated incidents are written off as accidents, and with no real action until the end, it can get pretty dull. This lack of action also has an effect on the body count as this is really low for this kind of film with nearly all of them taking on the familiar pattern of being bitten, leaving just small scars on the body, and then by becoming paralyzed, which isn't blood-inducing in any way as all it does is just creep-out, and there's not a whole lot to have that done to. The last flaw in here is the pretty blatant CGI used for the insects as a swarm. On their own, they're fine, but put more than a handful together and they're exposed to pretty terrible CGI that is quite hard to look realistic and doesn't offer much to change that since this does look pretty ridiculous at times. These here are all that lower this one.

Rated R: Violence, Language, Brief Nudity and animal violence aftermath.
