Looney Toons meets Nibelungen
10 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the most famous of these 7-minute Looney Toon cartoons featuring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the rest of the gang. However, we only have Bugs and his opponent Elmer Fudd in here. Fudd, as always, wants to have a rabbit meal, but it's not happening once again. Instead he (as Siegfried) falls in love with bugs as Brunhilde. It was a decent cartoon. I don't see it as epic as many do, but I guess its appreciation mostly comes through the fact that it is so different than the hundreds (maybe thousands) of other cartoons from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Opera is not exactly a subject that was used very frequently, if at all. They did not even shy away from an unhappy ending this time, just because it's always the case in opera. Oh well.. Bugs explained it, so he was alive which means he was playing a role and so was Elmer Fudd for the entire time. Oh wait, maybe they always do? The director is Chuck Jones, the writer is Michael Maltese and the voice acting comes from Mel Blanc. These three were among Warner Bros' most prolific filmmakers of all time and especially Blanc's over 1,000 acting credits are a figure for eternity. Good short film. Funny here and there, but as a whole not one of Warner Bros' best. A must-see probably only for opera lovers.
