What a fun, novel concept! Really liked the film's humorous exploration of the personal struggles of comic book heroes, and of course, sidekicks! I Was a Teenage Superhero Sidekick shows that there's actually a lot more happening with comic book characters than the typical hero vs. villain battle, and the writer/director is smart to tell the story of a sidekick who has quit the life. That said, the film still feels like a comic book movie, not just because of the subject matter, but also because of the excellent graphic interstitials, which both move the story forward and give the movie a very cool look.
The comic tone is unique, kind of a weird world played totally straight. That makes for a fun ride because although these characters are takes on comic book tropes, the film treats them as if they're real people, which in turn makes their problems real and relatable. And personally, I couldn't stop laughing whenever the Frog King was on screen.
There's a lot to like about this movie! Highly recommend giving it a go.
