Dark Skies doesn't make any effort to distinguish itself from its peers in the horror genre, which is not necessarily a bad thing as The Conjuring recently proved. Unfortunately the same can't be said for Dark Skies - it rambles on for way too long with generic and arbitrary scares that have no purpose or relation to the plot, before culminating in an unsatisfying climax. The movie feels like a rehash of Signs with a supernatural angle, but Dark Skies captures neither the family dynamic nor the scares of the former. In the end the movie doesn't do anything wrong, it just doesn't do it well enough. If you can look past the unoriginality and lack of scares, there is still a watchable movie underneath.
