Kalyug (1981)
6/10
Good Adaptation of Mahabaratha in modern day by Shyam Benegal
6 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Shyam Benegal a great filmmaker has given us several classics, Kalyug too is a great film by him, he sets the epic Mahabaratha in modern day of 1981.Recently Prakash Jha made Rajneeti which too was an adaptation of the epic, but it was set in politics here it's business. The film is well handled by him, It tells a story of a fight between 2 families who are related to each other, It consists of wars fought to win in business with most characters having grey shades, though some are not explained too like Rekha's character does have some question marks.Perhaps Shyam kept it intentionally ambiguous. her relationship with Bharat too hints of an extra marrital affair as shown in a scene towards the end but it's left for us to think.

Direction is great Music is okay, not many songs

Amongst the huge cast Shashi Kapoor is surprisingly restrained in his role and does a great job, he was the producer of the film but doesn't hog limelight. Raj Babbar is good too though he doesn't get much scope, Rekha plays her part well though it's sketchy, Anant Nag as Bharat is good Victor Banerjee is superb as Dhanraj, Reema Lagoo is good, Khulbushan Kharbanda too is good, AK Hangal is good, Urmila Matondkar played Rekha's son and is cute, Sushma Seth is good, Amongst rest Om Puri has a cameo of a union leader and he does a good job though his role exits suddenly,Supriya Pathak is good, Akash Khurana who debutted with this film is good rest are all good
