After watching Ushpizin, I was able to see how Orthodox Jews live and learn some of their customs. The Jewish couple in this film, Moshe and Mali, is experiencing a lot of problems because they don't have enough money for a sukkah or food, and are unable to conceive a child. Luckily (or seemingly lucky) money, a sukkah, and visitors soon come their way. Soon Moshe's friends from the past give the couple a new set of problems to deal with. I thought the film was very interesting as someone who didn't really know anything about this religion. It was very educational for me, in terms of not only the daily lives of Orthodox Jews, but also their traditions and festivals, specifically Sukkot. Every action and decision is related to God. The couple is constantly concerned with whether God is punishing or helping them. This devotion and reliance on God gave humor to the movie, like how the couple was so happy to have guests, yet they were eating all their food and bossing them around. Even though I couldn't really relate to the characters' religious background, I still felt for the couple as Moshe's old friends complicated their lives. Although I'm still wondering about what exactly happened to the visitors in the end. Overall, the movie was not only enjoyable plot-wise, but also educational.
