Post-war sadomasochism is a lesson in morality.

Warning: Spoilers
"Let me see her!" the extremely kinky Janis Carter demands after witnessing a brutal murder of a young woman with her married lover (William Gargan) who happens to be one of the officers involved in the investigation. Carter and Gargan saw who the killer was, but can't reveal their identity because it would expose the affair and hurt Gargan's somewhat clingy wife (Jeff Donnell). Carter, too, has something to loose, being married to a very powerful man, and not wanting to give that up. Wht is a supposedly honest police officer to do?

Told in flashback, this "B" noir is a neat sleeper, and while far from perfect, it is quite daring considering that the Hays code was still in effect and this came to breaking a few major rules. Janis Carter is a vixen with claws sharper than any Jurassic Park cl;one and obviously a bit kinky in her need for physical love. She rivals Stanwyck, Joan Bennett, Ann Savage and Jane Greer in ferocity. Even if this vixen isn't a killer here, you know she has that capability.

The theme is retribution, how the cheating husband learns the truth about his selfish lover, and has to be nearly destroyed to come to his senses and truly atone. While there are certainly better examples of true film noir, this one is an interesting entry with different elements in plot, style and execution.
