Horror Story (1993)

Warning: Spoilers
A wonderfully complex story that is as much dark as it is comical, with at the center the writer (who is writing a book, the stories of which are told in the rest of the film), who is eventually visited by some of the characters he himself created. It is stylized as an old silent film, but at times the actors 'break character' and speak out loud, as there are other sounds from time to time as well. Each storyline is in a different color and in the end all of them are connected, even if some natives have to dance through the earth to the other side... This is total insanity with beer dripping caves, bleeding books, an enchanting muse whose fingers are chopped off and then put back on again, and so on and so forth, with nudity and gore to spare. The settings are wonderful, many of them (most likely) inspired by German Expressionists long ago.

Storywise it is rather impossible (for me, after only two viewings) to completely unravel things, so the genre mystery certainly applies here as well, I think. Horror, love (unrequited or other), humour, tragedy, death and vile plots go down a plenty in this absolute adventure of a film.

A big 8 out of 10 (to be continued).
