Io Sono Un Autarchico/I Am Self Sufficient-Nanni Moretti tells that it is tough to do theater but easy to watch it on screen.
15 August 2013
It has been observed in the field of cinema that the depiction of theater in films is no easy matter neither for actors nor the director. The problem has a lot to do with the fact that most films about theater go beyond the realms of mere theatrical art in order to portray quality material about plays. This is why such films do begin confidently with lofty ideas about plays and the art of theater but lose their sense of artistic purpose once they find themselves on the trails which bear inimitable marks of actors' personal lives. I am self sufficient is one such film about the seemingly difficult yet cheerful lives of actors and a theater critic. Although Nanni Moretti is not exactly a protagonist in this film, he does manage to add tremendous substance to his role as an unlucky theater practitioner who is facing tough times as he doesn't know how to raise a single child when the mother has left "Le Foyer". Assaults of known as well as unknown facets of Italian culture are regular features of most Nanni Moretti films. This film is not an exception to the rule as Nanni Moretti takes casual potshots at "Il Cinema Italiano". The film is replete with innumerable scenes of this kind which help to establish the doctrine of 'mirth is girth'. Lastly, I am self sufficient is an excellent piece of entertainment which does not purport to be a film providing cheap thrills.
