Review of Lakhon Me Ek

Lakhon Me Ek (1971)
6/10
a clean and innocent movie

Watched this 1971 film especially for Mehmood and his comedy, although this film did not have as much comedy as a normal Mehmood film would have, but this discrepancy was covered up by two good songs 'Chanda O Chanda' sung separately by Lata Mangeshkar & Kishore Kumar and a duet 'Jogi O Jogi' sung by Lata Mangeshkar & Kishor Kumar, with excellent music by R.D. Burman. This was a typical film by South Indian producer Gemini, a social drama revolving around a good hearted and homeless person Mehmood with the background of living in a chawl (middle class housing in Mumbai, which was called 'Bombay' then) along with its various characters and their interactions with Mehmood. Portrayal of different families, living in a typical middle class chawl has been characterised and shown very well. People of different communities and regions living with the suburban short comings like a common spot for fetching water, which flows for a limited time, matches reality. This film is for those interested in a story portraying some real life situation with some entertainment. Mehmood was well supported by Radha Saluja, who left Bollywood after working in a few films. Overall it was a clean film without any glamour, though not being dull.
