A tragedy for Crockett
24 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode opens with a flashback to episode 3.11 'Forgive Us Our Debts' which reminds us of how Crockett was tricked into getting the man who killed his partner, Frank Hackman, off death row and back on the streets. Two years later a gang break into a house and kill the family; Crockett is convinced that Hackman is involved due to the MO. The investigation does indeed lead them to Hackman but he manages to escape during a brief fire fight; his wife isn't lucky and is killed in the crossfire. It turns out that the bullet that killed her came from Hackman's gun but he either doesn't know or doesn't care and takes revenge on Crockett in the worst way possible; he shoots Caitlin. While still dealing with the loss Crockett learns that Caitlin was pregnant at the time. After a few weeks leave Crockett returns to work just in time to get a lead on Hackman's location; the only real question now is what will Crockett do when he finds him?

After the disappointment of getting a clip show in the previous episode things are much better here even if the 'previously on Miami Vice' section was a little longer than strictly necessary. Hackman made a particularly unpleasant villain before so it was good to see Crockett finish his unfinished business even if the cost was high. The story is solid and when 'the tragic moment' occurs it is likely to come as a shock to anybody who hasn't had it spoilt. This episode sees a particularly fine performance from Don Johnson as he depicts Crockett's grief at the loss of his wife and unborn child. The ending will inevitably have consequences for Crockett and it will be interesting to see how they are handled in upcoming episodes.
