Hanif and the Fat Man
14 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
From the get-go, you know this impossibly obscure Filipino action flick is going to be something special. Opening with a series of clumsily choreographed fights and murders involving a fat bald man, the film also scores thanks to its brooding, barely there 'theme song' crooned by 'star' Rod Perry, an African-American actor later best known for a recurring role on the popular seventies television series SWAT. When the fat bald guy puts on a fez, you know you're going to be in psychotronic heaven. Did I mention this insane film also features the legendary Indian matinée idol Dev Anand and the future star of Wayne Wang's Joy Luck Club, Vietnamese beauty Kieu Chinh? Though produced in 1970, The Evil Within looks and plays like one of those goofy Bond rip-offs so popular in the mid-60s--and that, of course, is a very good thing. Don't miss this if the opportunity presents itself!
