This episode was the one that this series needed to keep it afoot. The consistent antagonist is not needed in a show that has an antagonist already in zombies. Shane was a cancer to the group and needed to be destroyed. For the show to continue with Shane as a member of the group, they would have had to have him murder Rick, Carl, Dwayne and Hershel. Every decision by Rick and Hershel he undermined, Carl was becoming more than a whiny child and would have wanted revenge for his father's death and Dwayne would not survive knowing that a murderer was trying to lead the group. This was coming and it was about time it was done.
