Documentary on theatre wunderkind
28 September 2011
I've enjoyed some of Chéreau's films--La fille de l'Orchidée, Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train, Gabrielle--so when the chance to see this doc on TFO arrived last night, I sat down with some enthusiasm to watch. Some of the old footage of theatre productions was interesting, and it was often fascinating to see Chéreau working out ideas in rehearsal, but the choppy editing and cursory approach to analyzing the man's contribution to French theatre was a bit disappointing.

I would have liked to know more about the artistic goals of the Théatre des amandiers where Chéreau mounted so many impressive productions in the 80s and 90s. We get snippets from these productions, as well as bits from the Wagnerian opera productions he became renowned for. The time went by fast.
