I remember watching this back in 1984 and it was groundbreaking. The real reason for this episode is that the higher ups didn't want the two women to be lesbians. I can't blame them.
Anyhow, it shows how hypocritical those people can be, because the landlady force Kate and Allie to lie that they were a lesbian couple, or else they will face a raise on the rent. It was later on that they found out that she was gay herself.
Near the end, the landlady told her that people don't consider them a family, but Kate and Allie were able to flip it back to them, telling them that other people don't consider the landlady and her partner to be a family. Perfect slice of humble pie if you ask me.
And yes, people in Greenwich Village are like that. I know, I lived in NYC for five years and I am familiar with Greenwich Village. Homosexuals do carry their own agendas and issues and shoved it down people's throats, just like heterosexuals do.
