Review of Siao Yu

Siao Yu (1995)
8/10
Chinese Immigration Drama in HYC
22 May 2011
This heartfelt gem of a story allows us insight into the plight of Chinese immigrants trying to attain citizenship in the US in NYC without beating us over the head with that fact. What would seem to be a low budget and dull production comes to life with the performances of Daniel J.Travanti as Mario and Rene Liu as Lin Siao Yu. The two stage a mock marriage in order for the young Chinese girl to gain citizenship.

Although the Chinese cast does a competent job, the movie is solidly anchored around the talents of Travanti and his character, Mario. Daniel J. Travanti literally breathes life into this movie with his considerable portrayal of a nice guy whose life didn't quite pan out. In the sunset of his life, Mario, extends decency and support to Lin Siao, who struggles with her would be fiancé' as the story progresses.

The looming conflicts of two intertwined relationships end in bittersweet fashion as the movie draws to a close with a final tear jerking event that I'll not spoil for you. That things never quite turn out as we planned is in evidence here without belaboring the point.

An indulgent thumbs up.
