One man's tragedy portrayed by Mikko Niskanen
27 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
In the beginning and in the end of this movie we are at the funeral of the bank manager Kalervo Haapanen. He has taken his own life, as we later find out.In flashbacks we see the events that led to that decision.Autumn Is to Change It All, or Syksyllä Kaikki on Toisin from 1978 is directed by its leading man Mikko Niskanen. It's loosely based on Ilmari Eskola's novel.Mikko Niskanen is phenomenal as Haapanen. He could play the tragedy of one man so well, the part of a suffering man.As we all saw in "Kahdeksan Surmanluotia".Tea Ista is amazing as his wife Ella. After this movie yesterday she spoke about this movie in an interview and shared her wonderful memories. And amazing is also Juha Niskanen (Mikko's nephew), who plays their son Juha. When we see him escaping the funeral to the rapids, wanting to jump...I just wonder why he didn't become an actor.Kari Heiskanen is very good as Kari Haapanen.Tarja-Tuulikki Tarsala is marvelous as Haapanen's lover.Aarno Sulkanen is great as Anttila. And so is Pirjo Leppänen as his wife Kaarina.Jyrki Luukko gives a fantastic performance as their son Manu. You have to like Olavi Ahonen's performance as Aulis Ristimäki.Kauko Helovirta is brilliant as Rauhala.Tapio Hämäläinen is superb as he always was, this time in the role of Pettinen.Mikko's brother, Sakari Niskanen plays the role of Pyhälä.Sulo Hokkanen can be seen as Rauhala's assistant.Tuija Piepponen is Bank teller.Niskanen gives here a great portrayal of a family life, where things aren't so good. There are some flawed people portrayed here, which makes a good drama. This movie didn't do too well which left Niskanen devastated. He had some great expectations for this movie. It should have done better.
