Review of Food Party

Food Party (2009–2010)
7/10
Jaw-droppingly whimsical.

I never saw the first season of Food Party, but what I have seen of season 2 has consistently left me staring shell-shocked at the screen while the credits roll. In a good way. Take Pee Wee's Playhouse, the Mighty Boosh, Hello Kitty and a cooking show, throw them all in a pot, stir vigorously and what you get is Food Party. The show's lack of polish may be off-putting to some (there's always the Disney Channel, guys), but to my mind it serves to expose the creativity at work here. Mercifully low-budget creativity. The secret ingredient is Tran herself, whose child-like demeanor and deadpan acting make me feel like I'm eavesdropping on a little girl's stuffed animal tea party. Except it's more like a little girl's stuffed animal imaginary cooking show adventure. Food Party is a crazy change of pace.
