Aasha (1980)

Sappy, Indian epic love story...

1st watched 1/26/2010 – 4 out of 10 (Dir-J. Om Prakash): Sappy, Indian epic love story definitely has it's good points including the songs & dancing but it wreaks from a goody-two-shoes perspective where pretty much everything eventually works out for everyone. The story is about a truck driver, named Deepak, who meets a professional singer, named Aasha, on the road and becomes her friend. She vows to make him a star and feels for him in other ways also but he's already engaged to be married. After his marriage, tragedy strikes as he has an accident and is presumed dead and his wife commits suicide(except she doesn't die either). She is blinded, has a child and stays at a religious retreat. Her daughter, upon selling trinkets, runs into the former truck driver who now is engaged to be married to the singer. Upon finding out about the child's misfortunate mother, the singer performs a good deed and pays for her operation to bring back the mother's sight. Of course, Deepak, doesn't find out about the connections until near the end. This is a very soap opera-like story with religious overtones and good music but once the drama begins we don't hear much more of the music – sadly. Overall, a pretty sappy movie that was enjoyable to watch but didn't bring about any long-lasting effect.
