Making Their Point
10 January 2010
Mary has a new boyfriend, a guy she met at the market. Immediatetly, they hit it off but nosy Rhoda has to ruin things by asking how old is the guy? He appears too young for her, she thinks (not that it's any of her business, but apparently she thinks so. Actually, though, Lou and Ted say the same thing and it's proved to be true.) Anyway, it turns out while Mary is 33 this guy ("Stephen") is just 25.....not THAT huge a gap but......

......The show points out the problems inherent with trying to be involved with someone younger than you. The episode has some funny lines (what MTM show didn't?) but it gets its point across more visually when Mary and Rhoda go to a party at Stephen's ' "pad." Boy, can you see a "generation gap" there, or at least a cultural gap between professional full-worker who dresses as an adult and a 20-something who looks and acts like a late teen. It's exaggerated, of course, to prove the writer's point but it's effective.
