Oh man, I was not supposed to watch this, not after having accidentally witnessed last season's super-lame "Kicks", but then my eye caught a figurative blinking red light in the TV program listings' summary of this episode. In "Kicks", C.J. had to choose between glamorous life as a model or a poorly paid lifeguard. She chose to remain a lifeguard. Now I read in the summary that in this episode, first aired a mere 4½ months after "Kicks", which supposedly kicks off (sorry, couldn't resist) but really just lazily rolls out Season 4, Matt faces a similar dilemma: riches or the life of a lifeguard? Gee, I wonder what he will choose...
In addition to recycling itself, Baywatch also recycles The Poseidon Adventure premise (modified by substituting a jet plane for a cruise ship) as a yawn-inducing cliffhanger. Oh, never mind that a jet plane that loses both engines would so totally be destroyed and everyone inside it would be killed when it crashed the sea - this is Baywatch, after all. In Baywatch's defense, it has to be said that The Poseidon Adventure premise (modified by substituting a jet plane or a small ship for a cruise ship) has been recycled probably more times than anyone can count, but that doesn't really help the case of this episode. And the "surprise" Mitch's ex-wife is bringing with her on her visit is another recycled scenario the outcome of which we all can guess the moment the scenario is presented to us.
Fourth season and all the trademark unintentional silliness is steadfast held in place, so no special comments on that front. Though after three seasons, a question begs to be asked: Why did they just not release endless clip-shows and video compilations of the gratuitous slo-mo montages? Better yet, since some cast members have since admitted that having casual sex with some fellow cast members did take place, why did they not make some celebrity sex tapes? Both would have been more profitable than to bother with actually writing, filming and editing this garbage.
