Black Russian
9 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
By far the best things about this production are the music, scored by director Robert Hossein's composer father Andre, which he injects with a genuine 'Russian' feel, and the photography/decor which capture the opulence of pre-Revolutionary Russia to a fare-thee-well. Gert Frobe played a James Bond villain around the same time and there are moments when he seems unsure which film he's appearing in whilst the other main role, that of his enemy Yousekop is entrusted to an actor, Peter McEnnery who is unable to animate it. Real-life Princess Ira Furstenburg is along for the ride (as she was so many times in the seventies) to add whatever cachet a fifteen-year old bride can to the proceedings and in a somewhat bizarre cast list Geraldine Chaplin acquits herself reasonably well. A curiosity rather than a strong film.
