Don't Even Use That Title!
24 March 2006
I like Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. They each have a certain charm. I've always been amazed what Chan can do with his martial arts in virtually any situation. Why pretend to do a remake of this book. It isn't and it's dishonest and misleading. Why not just make up another title and go ahead and have fights and pratfalls and all the other stuff that appears here. Other than the time thing, there is absolutely nothing left over. The 1956 version was pretty bad but this one is really bad. The characters come and go with virtually no commitment to a plot. Everything is a joke; there are pauses to deliver the one liner, just like any Jackie Chan movie. Again, I think that he's a martial arts genius but it just doesn't work here. The greatest sin a film can do is pretend to be something it is not. Bad movies don't always aspire to be good. This is a big budget, basically unfunny, rambling film.
