What a tribute to New Orleans!
27 September 2005
I was fortunate to see this film last month. It is one of the best movies I have seen all year. This is a wonderful "true life" story about how the writer/director, Tom Anton, found his first love (Sandi Russell, co-writer) after 25 years of separation caused by events beyond their control. If you are looking for a sappy love story – this is not for you. If you are looking for a powerful, real life romantic drama with outstanding dialogue – then this film is for you. The two leads, Martin Donovan and Kelly Lynch, are dynamic on screen and you genuinely feel that they are soul mates that re-discovered their love that was lost 25 years earlier. MC Gainey, who plays the lead character's brother, literally steals every scene he is in. He was my favorite character in the film. Best of all, the film is set in pre-Katrina New Orleans, and is filled with beautiful scenes of New Orleans and the French Quarter, Jackson Square, the Garden District, and so on. If you want to see why, as Tom Anton puts it, "New Orleans is worth fighting for", go see this movie. It is beautifully written, filmed and edited – and the music is fantastic. The cinematography simply is outstanding, and it is hard to believe I was watching an independent film as opposed to a high dollar studio film. I hope a music soundtrack will follow, as it is filled with wonderful songs by local New Orleans artists. What a tribute to New Orleans! It is obvious this film was a labor of love for first-time director Tom Anton, and it shows. I would recommend this film to everyone and, if I were in charge, nomination for awards would be forthcoming.
