Worried About the Movie
12 December 2004
Through taking one of the most influential musicals of the 20th century and making it into a movie, you're taking a gamble. Not to mention the fact that it is opera-like with singing throughout most of it. Webber's classic is in trouble, to put in bluntly. I bought the soundtrack the other day, I was curious and I love the musical anyways. First note, Gerald Butler sounds like he's drunk at a Karaoke bar or something. There's very little emotion in his voice, and it sounds very unprofessional. How did he get the part? I don't know, but hopefully the acting is better than the singing. For someone who is known to have graced the stage of the Met since the age of 7, Emmy Rossum's singing is not mature enough or developed enough to take on the role of Christine. She's 18 yes, and a lot of singers have voices that are far beyond their years. I am not saying that she doesn't have a good singing voice, I am saying that for the specific part of Christine, her voice is not developed enough to take on that role. Just from hearing the soundtrack, her voice is lacking power and is "breathy" during a lot of the songs. I'm sure that her acting will be great though because, she is a good actress. However, for the role of Christine you need the power and emotion in your voice which Emmy was lacking a lot. There were some powerful moments, but as a whole, it was underdeveloped. I know a lot of people may say "What do you know about singing?", but I have been trained in voice since I was young and currently go to music school for vocal performance. A redeemable performance however, is that of Patrick Wilson(Raoul). He conveys the right emotion and his voice is beautiful. As a whole, the soundtrack is not that bad, but it definitely could be a lot better. I really am looking forward to seeing if the movie is good or not. I've heard good things about it, so it should be OK, but for Andrew Lloyd Webber's sake, I hope it's good.
