The Swan (2004–2005)

This week, The Swan hits a new low of superficiality...

Warning: Spoilers
Ugh. This week, April 19, The Swan hit a new low.

The real depth of this show's depravity were revealed in the value placed on the different choices made. In one case, one woman claimed she wanted to "recognize herself" and opt for minimum surgery and more intense physical fitness training. The docs were clearly saying they wanted her to undergo "more aggressive" surgery. Surgery she really didn't need. In the end, she was chastized for supposedly not committing to "the program" like her competitor, who gladly accepted the more extensive surgical procedures.

[I don't believe that this, being a TV series, would count as a spoiler but in keeping with the guidelines I caution that the following could be considered borderline spoilers - if anyone really cares]

No big surprise that the woman who transformed herself more with physical fitness lost to the one who was not NEARLY as physically fit but had undergone more extreme surgery. This was the obvious priority of the show; to transform one's self more by surgery than the bolsetering of self-esteem and more healthy methods such as physical fitness.

It's not like we needed more reason to HATE this show. However the surgeons PUSHING more extensive surgical procedures when the patient wants to "be able to recognize herself" is a new low. Surgery should be used to correct major problems and improve one's own natural looks instead of altering a person beyond recognition. The winner also uttered the quote "I don't recognize myself! Isn't it great?"

This show embodies all that's wrong in American society today and simply ignores what's best in the American spirit. Personally, I deplore the effect this show is having on young women, all in an effort to sell plastic surgery procedures. I wonder what kind of kickback this show gets from the plastic surgery industry to air this "commercial" for them? Makes you wonder, eh?
