Two Men's Lives in Depressed Istanbul
28 October 2003
Distant describes two male cousins' lives in depressed Istanbul in low-budget, tiny-crew film's honest manner. The implication is subtle hence real. For example, the contrast between two protagonists, who are supposedly a city mouse and a country mouse, is not evidently portrayed at the beginning; it is gradually built as the story progresses.

Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who is also credited as producer, writer, and cinematographer, achieved the best result from what was available, using his apartment as a shooting location and his car as a prop and casting his friends. He expressed his preference to remain in low budget filmmaking, in the Q&A session at New York Film Festival. I personally think, however, he should go through the other phases even just for experiences, while occasions are in front of him.
