Review.

A Belgian woman film-maker made this affectionate tribute to one of the greatest women of the screen, ever! She was the magnificent Roman actress we know from OPEN CITY, AMORE, her Academy Award winning role in THE ROSE TATTOO, and countless other movies. We are treated here to excerpts from many of her films, including the lesser-seen MAMMA ROMA of Pasolini of L'ONOREVOLE ANGELINA of Luigi Zampa. Many scenes from one of her Italian TV films, L'AUTOMOBILE, by Alfredo Giannetti, are also included. There are scenes of the real Magnani interviewed as well as fascinating interviews with some great celebrities of the Italian screen like Pasolini, Rossellini, Visconti, Fellini, Giulietta Masina, De Sica, and Zeffirelli. While the structure of the film is uneven and some of the scenes are sloppily put-together, one forgives a lot when watching such fascinating material!
