to be perfectly blunt, i figured i'd last about 10 minutes into 'the eyes of tammy faye' before i imploded in a kitsch O.D., visions of giant hair and bucketloads of foundation swimming before my unfocusing eyes. not so. what i found instead was a wickedly sharp, skillfully constructed and unexpectedly touching glimpse at one of the most, uh, colorful personalities of the past few years. both tammy faye, the person - and 'tammy faye', the film - are gloriously plucky, jaw-droppingly unpretentious and ultimately lovable.
