American Desi (2001)

Funny!

This movie was a funny exploration of the 1st generation Indian experience. The script seemed to be written for a specific audience... not bad for a debut film because this audience is growing in number, visibility, representation and significance.

There seemed to be too much time spent on "cool" camera angles and shots rather than directing the actors. Purva Bedi is capable of much more, a noteworthy actress. Eric Axen's portrayal of the white friend was endearing as well as memorable.

At first the film seemed to turn into the very thing it was making fun of, eg. the typical Indican movie. However, it seems to me that was the exact point the writer was trying to make... Indians born and raised in the US usually spend some time making fun of Indians from India... and visa versa. Bottom line, we are all Indian, period.
