A smart action-packed thriller
23 December 1998
The BIG action film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and veteran director Tony Scott have made the conspiracy thriller Enemy of the State starring WILL SMITH as Robert Clayton Dean a DC-based labor lawyer who finds his life turned upside down when he is given a tape(secretly) of the murder of a congressman by Thomas Reynolds (JON VOIGHT) and his small hit squad. When Reynolds discover that the murder was taped he sends his thugs to go after Robert. In the process, they destroy his life by having him lose his job, his credit, and his wife, Carla (REGINA KING), who worries when she receives pictures of him and his former girlfriend and lover from a recent affair, together. As Dean goes to her for help he finds Brill playd by GENE HACKMAN who is an angry, ex-NSA agent thad reluctantly helps him. Audiences seem to like plots where an everyday person gets caught up in extraordinary circumstances. From Cary Grant in the Alfred Hitchcok hit "North By Northwest" and on of Harrison Fords best "The Fugitive," to John Travolta in "Blow Out," and Robert Redford headlining "Three Days of the Condor,". Jon Voight has been playing the villain in his recent movies like in The Rainmaker,Mission: Impossible and Anaconda and he does a good job in Enemy of the State but Gene Hackman is better as the ex-covert operative and only possible salvation for our bewildered hero. This is a great thrillir and another winner for Bruckheimer,Scott,Smith,Hackman,Voight.......
