Potential wasted on TV series
14 September 1999
The TV series "A Whole New Ballgame" should have gotten a much longer life than it did on television. Julia Campbell and Brett Sooner were splendid in their lead roles; and the supporting cast's characters, while not as memorable as those from "The Simpsons", were still commendable. "Ballgame" showed promise during its first few weeks, airing as high as #50 in the Nielsen ratings against competition such as UPN's "Star Trek Voyager". When ABC decided to cancel "Ballgame" after only seven episodes, I was hopeful that NBC would pick up the show for the 1995-96 season, which, of course, didn't happen. "Ballgame" will be remembered for all eternity as the first prime-time series to feature the Internet in a starring role, not as an afterthought of the Major League Baseball 1994 lockout.
