Tell Tale Hearts (1992– )
Life Sentence

When first broadcast on BBC, this miniseries was refreshingly different. It follows the story of Anthony Steadman, a child murderer being released from prison after 17 years. Then there is Sally McCann, a mother whose child disappeared around the time of the original murder, who is pursuing Steadman. Also on Steadman's trail is Becky Wilson, a local radio reporter, for whom the case brings back ghosts from her own past. Brid Brennan is fantastic as Sally, you really feel her pain and her helplessness. However, Bill Paterson as Steadman is truly outstanding. His performance has great depth and realism. He also achieves something I thought impossible in that you almost sympathise with Steadman's plight on being released from prison. This has not surfaced on British TV since the original broadcast. It will, however, remain in my memory for many a day.
