Guiding Light (1952–2009)
Something has to change...
4 November 2001
The Guiding Light has been one of the dumbest soaps in recent years. I quit watching when they did the cloning storyline. I think the biggest culprit, besides lousy writers is Paul Rauch. I wonder what he's been smoking. TGL was about the Bauer family. Now we have San Christobel and the mob. If I were the writer, Alonzo would decide to take the throne and throw Richard and Cassie off the island. Then we would never see San Christobel again. As for the mob, there WAS a soap for that. It was called THE EDGE OF NIGHT. If the core families are brought back to the front burner, TGL might live to see 50 (the TV years). I feel Lucky Gold has potential to bring The Guiding Light back, but Paul Rauch stands in the way. Rauch should be fired. Ed Bauer should be brought back. I would cast Mart Hulswit or Peter Simon. Something like this could help TGL regain its identity. It's also time for a new title sequence. I have an idea here, but it will take time to develop it. As for the fiftieth anniversary on TV, I would use the old titles to open and close (no CBS squeeze here). My TGL title reuses a previous theme and would be better than the five second opening that Rauch likes. Nothing personal, Paul.
