The new documentary Mr. Jimmy tells the story of a Japanese kimono salesman named Akio Sakurai, who worships Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. For three decades, Sakurai has adopted the persona of “Mr. Jimmy,” playing guitar like Page and attempting note-for-note recreations of Led Zeppelin concerts in Tokyo clubs. After Page encouraged him, he moved to Los Angeles and joined a tribute act, Led Zepagain, to continue his idol worship. The picture, distributed worldwide by Abramorama, is in theaters now.

“Himari Akeno can't wait to start high school! Even though she's parting ways with her twin sister, Mio, Himari's enthusiasm to start this new chapter of her life is palpable—that is, until a traumatic incident sends her home to hide in her room…Watching Himari's dreams shatter is more than Mio can bear, especially when her sister still longs for an ordinary student life. Determined to see her twin get back out into the world, Mio “catches a cold” and convinces her sister to fill in until she “recovers.” As long as the shy, introverted Himari can pull off impersonating the bubbly, energetic Mio, nothing could go wrong…right?” (Yen Press)

A relatively straightforward teenage rom-com, “Sunbeams in the Sky” offers little in the way of originality–even introducing a cultural fair segment in its inaugural volume.

“Suzume” might just be one of Makoto Shinkai’s best. I might be saying this right now because it’s fresh in my memory. While “Your Name” was an impactful love story, “Suzume” reaches a deeper level of emotion through its connection to nature. Makoto Shinkai reminds everyone of the disaster that struck Japan in 2011 and left the Japanese countryside in pieces. “Suzume” is quite lighthearted for the serious subject it tackles but still manages to leave a mark on the viewer. Not to say it makes a joke of natural disasters, but it adds a fantastical element to them, making it feel like there is much more power at play. “Suzume” is like a folksong about the natural disasters in Japan, bringing a kind of acceptance of nature’s mighty hand.
Suzume is a 17-year-old girl who was orphaned at the age of 4 and lives with her aunt now.

From Makoto Shinkai comes a critically-acclaimed new romantic drama set in the rain-soaked streets (and skies) of modern Tokyo. The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…
