One of the most horrific terror strikes in history took place on July 1, 2016, in a diplomatic area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Five extremists attacked the Holey Artisan Bakery and took hostages inside. The horrifying incident rattled the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and even the Prime Minister. Many foreigners and non-Islamic people were murdered and injured, while only Bangladeshi Muslims were spared, yet they lived a nightmare that we would all like to forget. Hansal Mehta’s “Faraaz” describes that harrowing night, based on the actual occurrence that transpired at the Dhaka café Holey Artisan.
In addition to depicting the true incident, “Faraaz” also emphasizes that terrorism cannot be attributed to a particular religion but rather to the philosophy that supports it. Islam is seen as a violent religion in the wider world, but the Quran, like other holy books, preached peace. But, there are those extremist Islamists out there who only comprehend...

Aadyam Theatre presents its latest production, ‘As Bees In Honey Drown’, an adaptation of Douglas Carter Beane’s award-winning theatre play – a hilarious and thought-provoking satire on contemporary culture. Adapted by Akarsh Khurrana and directed by Anahita Uberoi, the play promises to tickle your funny bone while exploring themes of deceit, betrayal, artistic ambition and the power of illusion.
Almost famous author Dhruv captures the attention of Alexa, a popular socialist who has made the world of celebrity her home. While she claims to be a music record producer, what is clear is that she wants Dhruv to write the screenplay of her life story. “Just spend time with me,” she says, “and you’ll learn all you need to know.” To Dhruv, her outsized persona is thrillingly alluring.
Director Anahita Uberoi delivers this clever and witty production that lampoons our society’s obsession with fame and triumph, and does so with humour and wit.

Faraaz
Directed by Hansal Mehta
Compared with Hansal Mehta’s other two films on global terrorism, Shahid and Omerta, Faraaz is a mellower more lenient and forgiving work. It is predominantly a discourse on true Islam and its subversion by terrorists as embodied in the two main characters Faraaz(Zahan kapoor) and Nibras(Aditya Rawal).
The dialogues between the two are sharp and relevant. Most importantly these dialogues never overstay their welcome, hence the film, though largely confined to a café held hostage by a bunch of misguided youngsters, never gets verbose. Instead Hansal Mehta brings in a sense of reined-in anxiety.
The agony of those outside the sealed café, whether the government officials or parents of the hostages(Juhi Babbar Soni, Amir Ali are both superb , though the former has a far more dramatic scope than the latter) is given as much priority as the terrorized hostages inside the café.

Director Hansal Mehta is back with another hard-hitting story titled ‘Faraaz’, based on the real-life terrorist attack that ravaged a Dhaka Cafe in 2016, which will release on the big screen on February 3.
Filmmaker Hansal Mehta said, “To me, Faraaz is a story of our polarised times. Through the one event that rocked Dhaka – the 2016 attack on the Holey Artisan cafe – I’ve tried to explore the broader theme of violence and what really drives young, vulnerable minds towards it.”
“Designed as a nail-biting thriller that plays out over one tense night, my attempt with Faraaz has also been to shine a light on the immense courage and humanity that it takes to stand up against violence. Because standing up against bigotry and the carnage it triggers is the only way to defeat it.”
The film stars Zahan Kapoor, Aditya Rawal, Juhi Babbar, Aamir Ali, Sachin Lalwani, Palak Lalwani and Reshham Sahaani in the cast.

Bamfaad (Zee5)
Starring Aditya Rawal, Shalini Pandey, Vijay Verma
Directed by Ranjan Chandel
Call it a withdrawal symptom. But I was sure as hell happy to welcome this gripping if somewhat familiar mofussil love story about an Allahabad boy who falls for a girl who happens to be the local don’s keep. Boy and Girl make a run to the nearest safe town. Obviously Sairat has been streaming in Allahabad.
The comfort of the familiar is not what makes Bamfaad watchable. It is that recycled yet raw energy of the smalltown passion-play that gives this feral romance a cutting edge. When we first meet the young hero Nasir(debutant Aditya Rawal) he is an aimless and brawl-friendly lout, a problem child for his worried parents who, for a change, are no walkover. In fact Nasir’s dad (played with marvellous restrain by Vijay Kumar) is a powerful town-member so...

Immediate reaction when the end credits roll
He is ?left? but right. She is exploited but she knows her ?rights?. Bamfaad directed by Ranjan Chandel and presented by Anurag Kashyap had the potential of an explosively raw and pious love story from Allahabad but alas. The introduction of the new age righteous rebel in the ?left? handed Aditya Rawal is the silver lining. It?s all together another matter that megastar Amitabh Bachchan is also left - handed, is the undefeated icon for the young rebel persona on screen and is from Allahabad.

The semifinalists have been named for the 13th annual NBCUniversal Short Film Festival, which celebrates diverse stories in a search for the next generation of storytellers.
Chosen from more than 3,400 submissions, the semifinalists feature stories about people of ethnically diverse backgrounds, the Lgbtq community, and women. Of the 15 projects that made the cut this year, 11 are directed and/or directed by women, topping 2017’s record inclusion rate, and about half feature stories centered on female protagonists.
“In a time where female storytellers are powerfully calling on the industry for more opportunities and recognition, it is fitting that our Short Film Festival has set a new record for female writers and directors represented in our semifinal shorts,” said Karen Horne, Svp programming talent development & inclusion at NBC Entertainment. “I’m proud that our festival not only puts more female storytellers into the spotlight but also features an array of impactful shorts about diverse people.
