"Do you want to know the secret to a divorce...?" "Yes, yes I do." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Bad Therapy, arriving straight-to-vod coming up in April. Set in Los Angeles, the film is about a struggling married couple who decide to see a marriage counselor named Judy Small. But it turns out this seemingly competent therapist is more than meets the eye, when her own conflicting impulses are brought to light through this couple's problems. Sounds like yet another perfectly cliche Los Angeles film. Alicia Silverstone & Rob Corddry star as the couple, with Michaela Watkins as the therapist, and a cast including Anna Pniowsky, Aisha Tyler, Sarah Shahi, Haley Joel Osment, Dichen Lachman, Sunkrish Bala, and Ginger Gonzaga. Not sure if anyone needs this kind of therapy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for William Teitler's Bad Therapy, direct from...

Casey Affleck makes his narrative feature filmmaking debut with the post-apocalyptic Light of My Life. It is a graceful sucess.

In the opening scene of Light of My Life, the first narrative feature written and directed by Oscar-winning actor Casey Affleck, a man named Caleb (Affleck) and his daughter, nicknamed Rag (Anna Pniowsky), lie in a dimly lit, weathered tent. Caleb tells Rag a story derived from the tale of Noah’s Ark, but which gets revised as Caleb adjusts to Rag’s questions and observations. It’s a risky way to open a film and points up both Affleck’s strengths and flaws as a first-time filmmaker: the sequence establishes the bond and love between the two characters, yet goes on too long for its own good.
The relationship between Caleb and Rag is the full, beating heart of Light of My Life, and Affleck does excellent work with it,...

“Do you want me to tell you a story?” It could be any father, asking their kid if they need to hear a yarn before they drift off to sleep. In this case, we’re looking down at a dad (writer-director Casey Affleck) — we never find out his name, he’s simply Dad — telling his daughter, Rag (Anna Pniowsky), a long, convoluted fairy tale involving foxes, someone who’s “a futzer, a fiddler,” crowds and a large raft. Eventually, it’s revealed that he’s talking about the biblical parable...

Casey Affleck says he stayed “quiet” following the allegations of sexual misconduct that made news in 2016 because he didn’t want to seem to be in opposition to the #MeToo movement “that I really wanted to champion.”
Speaking with Dax Shepard on the latter’s new Armchair Expert podcast, Affleck addressed the allegations made by two women who worked on I’m Still Here, the 2010 mockumentary Affleck directed starring Joaquin Phoenix.
“I really wanted to support all but I felt like the best thing to do was to just be quiet,” Affleck told Shepard, “so that I didn’t seem to be in opposition to something that I really wanted to champion…It’s a tough spot to be in especially if you really do appreciate and want to be a support of the side that seems angriest, and the anger is being directed at you.”

Anna Pniowsky stars opposite Light Of My Life screenwriter/director Casey Affleck in a father-daughter relationship. They live in a post-catastrophe society of the future, where the female population is feared to be wiped out by a mysterious plague, which has taken her mother, played by Elisabeth Moss. Affleck, a longtime favourite of David Lowery, Best Actor Oscar winner for Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester By The Sea, and director of the Joaquin Phoenix film I'm Still Here, creates in Light Of My Life an alternative universe where disguise is a mode of survival.

Drawing from Children of Men, The Road, and even a dash of Leave No Trace, Casey Affleck’s narrative directorial debut Light of My Life imagines a dystopic world in which almost all women have succumbed to a disease, rendering a world in which half the population is gone. Affleck stars as Caleb, father to Rag (relative newcomer Anna Pniowsky), a young girl who was born just before the so-called “women’s plague” hit and was one of the few to survive. Ahead of a release in just a few weeks from Saban Films, the first trailer has now arrived.
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “The allegations against Affleck that resurfaced around the time of his Oscar win (sexual harassment suits dating back to 2010 that were financially settled out of court) have been well-documented, and it is tough to consider his first narrative feature as a director without them coming to mind.

"Just because people aren't getting sick anymore, doesn't mean the world is right again." Saban Films has debuted the official trailer for Light of My Life, a new film written and directed by actor Casey Affleck. This first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and also stopped by the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in which a disease has killed all women, the film is about a father who must hide his daughter to keep her safe from the remaining few scavengers left alive. It's mostly a slow burn, dialogue-based, quiet drama with just a few thrilling, action-y moments. Affleck stars with newcomer Anna Pniowsky, and the small indie cast includes Elisabeth Moss, Tom Bower, Timothy Webber, and Hrothgar Mathews. For his long-awaited followup to his controversial feature directorial debut, “I’m Still Here,” Casey Affleck picked a bit of a strange premise to tackle: a post-apocalyptic drama about a world without women. The actor and filmmaker settled two lawsuits in 2010 accusing him of sexual harassment and other forms of misconduct during the making of “I’m Still Here.” Despite the lawsuits being settled, Affleck has faced scrutiny over his behavior in the wake of the #MeToo and Time’s Up anti-harassment movements.
When he debuted his latest film, “Light of My Life,” at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, he hit back at queries regarding its genesis. “It’s not. I wrote this movie and made this movie before all of those things became part of the conversation,” Affleck said at the film’s festival press conference about the film being a response to his personal history.

The new film from Casey Affleck arrives at the tail end of a smattering of telling coincidences and sliding door moments. In February 2017, he won an Academy Award playing the lead in Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, a film that was originally intended to be the directorial debut of one John Krasinski. That actor would eventually release his next directorial effort A Quiet Place in spring of 2018, a few weeks after Debra Granik’s somewhat similar albeit sci-fi-free Leave No Trace had premiered in Sundance. A survivalist, eco-sensitive, sci-fi/horror hybrid that Krasinski wrote, directed, and starred in, it did gangbusters while Granik’s film was warmly embraced by critics and audiences. And now we have Light of My Life, a survivalist, eco-sensitive sci-fi/horror hybrid that is written by, directed by, and starring Casey Affleck.

The 54th Karlovy Vary Film Festival kicked off Friday with a short explainer in communist-era culture from host Marek Eben, who commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in the Czech Republic with a tribute to a retro snack. Eben reminded audiences of what the evening would have looked like if not for the peaceful overthrow of the regime by Václav Havel and his followers with one word: chlebíčky.
The notorious open-faced egg and mayo sandwich appetizers that used to mark every party congress were guaranteed to land on your clothes, he explained as the mainly Czech audience broke up. “Then we were all equals,” Eben noted ironically.
It wasn’t clear whether anyone shared the joke, told in Czech, to Julianne Moore before she took the stage to receive her Crystal Globe for contribution to world cinema. Moore, who is also in the Bohemian spa town to screen the drama “After the Wedding,...

Saban Films has acquired U.S. rights to Casey Affleck’s narrative feature debut, “Light of My Life.”
The dystopian survival drama is written, directed by, and stars Affleck along with Anna Pniowsky (“PEN15”) and Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”). “Light of My Life” had its world premiere at last month’s Berlin International Film Festival.
The movie follows a father (Affleck) and child (Pniowsky) who journey through the outskirts of society a decade after a pandemic has wiped out half the world’s population. As a father struggles to protect his child at all costs, their bond, and the character of humanity, is tested.
“This has been a passion-driven project for the filmmakers, who have crafted a beautiful and sophisticated film, grounded with superb performances,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley. “We couldn’t be more honored to be part of such a dedicated team. Our audiences will fall...

Casey Affleck has appeared in a vast range of movies, but when it comes to the work that defines him as an actor he has long demonstrated a certain penchant for slow-cooked artisanal cinema — for films that revel in their high-mindedness and move at a snail’s pace to prove it. That mode probably kicked in for him when he gave his first astounding and widely acclaimed performance, in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” (2007), an art Western that was gripping, at least to some of us, even though it took two hours and 40 minutes to come to a full boil. I can’t say that I was a fan of “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” the outlaw-on-the-run domestic badlands drama that starred Affleck in 2013, but that film, too, had a heady aura of deliberation. So, in a more sweeping way, did “Manchester by the Sea...

Post-apocalyptic dramas have become such a staple of modern storytelling that they often take the backdrop for granted, as if audiences know the way the world ends so well that it requires little elaboration. Casey Affleck’s bleak “Light of My Life” — in which he directed, wrote, and stars — falls into this loose category of talky, character-based survival dramas that may as well exist in a single expanded universe.
To be fair, Affleck has conceived an original scenario, and he’s placed it against a gorgeous, lyrical backdrop. “Light of My Life” delivers a lush variation on familiar elements, and wends its way to a tense final showdown that makes the wandering trajectory worthwhile. The movie unfolds in the wake of a disease that has wiped most of the women on Earth, while Affleck’s unnamed father defends his young daughter (astonishing newcomer Anna Pniowsky) from a man’s world.

Halfway through “Pen15″ comes a scene we’ve seen a million times before. A teenager, fumbling to understand their own changing body, figures out that masturbating can feel amazing, only to have their well-meaning mother open the door and catch them in the act. This pubescent horror story is so ubiquitous onscreen that it’s practically become a requisite in most any coming of age story, but there’s one basic, crucial difference between that cliché and “Pen15’s” take. That humiliated teen is almost always a boy. “Pen15,” by deliberate contrast, hands that scene over to a girl, who’s embarrassed and terrified and secretly thrilled to have figured out what she can do for herself, without any help at all.
“Pen15” flips the adolescent script like this so many times with such clever insight that it can genuinely become disorienting after a lifetime of never seeing anything quite like it onscreen.

The world is a grim place where humanity hangs in the balance and every stranger is a potential threat in Casey Affleck's Light of My Life. But inside the tiny tent on the forest floor where a father coaxes his daughter to sleep with a story is an intimate oasis of trust and protection. In Berlin to tout his latest film, Oscar-winning actor Casey Affleck said Friday that everyone “has had to do some sort of self-reckoning” and ponder how to “play a positive role” in the era of #MeToo and other movements highlighting the harassment and discrimination women have suffered in the entertainment and other industries.
He also said that his new film, “Light of My Life,” a dark survival drama in which a father fights to protect his daughter in a dystopian world, wasn’t a direct response to the #MeToo movement or his own situation since decade-old allegations of sexual harassment resurfaced in 2016. Affleck wrote, produced, directed and stars in “Light of My Life,” which world premieres at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday evening. Elisabeth Moss also stars.

Exclusive: Here’s the first clip from Oscar winner Casey Affleck’s passion project — Light of My Life — which screened today at the Berlin International Film Festival. Affleck wrote, produced, directed and starred in this film. It is an incredible accomplishment for any filmmaker and one that is hard to do well, but Affleck’s father/daughter drama set against a dark, dystopian world is beautifully crafted in every way.
From its opening scene of a father’s imaginative bedtime story to his daughter — which instantly captures the heart of both characters (see exclusive clip above) — to the ongoing suspense born out of hypervigilance as the two escape across a bitterly cold landscape, the story takes its audience on an uncertain, and at the same time, thoughtful journey.

The actor is making his narrative directorial debut with “Light of My Life,” which was just added to the Panorama section of next month’s Berlin Film Festival. Post Manchester by the Sea, in February of 2017, Casey Affleck began filming Light of My Life in British Columbia’s Okanagan valley. Significantly slowing down on the acting front (his reserved for contributions to David Lowery’s cinema) if Affleck’s sophomore film didn’t show on the 2018 fest circuit it might be due to misconduct on the set of I’m Still Here or having a film like Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace (also a tale featuring a father and daughter taking refuge in the woods) take up space on the fest circuit.
