There are few people on planet Earth who can rap as fast as J Noa — and even fewer who actually have something to say. Beyond merely precocious, her voice carries the weight of one who’s seen some things and lived to tell about them.

Washington Heights has a storied history of culture and entrepreneurship. Long before the musical and recent movie adaptation of "In the Heights" brought the vibrant spectacle of the neighborhood to audiences across the world, Manhattan's Washington Heights was already an important ethnic enclave for Latines living in NYC. This is particularly the case for the Dominican community. So, when Diana Dotel, co-founder of Mtw agency, was conceiving an event that would spotlight Dominican women that are changing the sound of género urbano, she knew exactly where it needed to be: the United Palace on 177th and Broadway in the heart of the heights.

On Friday night, a massive, sold-out crowd began flooding into United Palace, the gilded theater in Washington Heights that’s become a rite of passage for major Latin stars, Bad Bunny and El Alfa included. An enthusiastic audience, primarily made up of Dominican women, turned out for an unprecedented event: Mujeres Del Movimiento, a first-of-its-kind festival in New York, organized by women with an all-women line-up.
Even before the show began, the crowd quickly transformed into hype men and women, chanting, clapping in sync, and fervently waving their flags in the air.

As the rap sound continues to make waves across the globe - often far from the Black communities that birthed it - a young artist is emerging in the international scene, who is using the genre as a platform to speak up for her community. J Noa, a 17-year-old Dominicana from the San Cristóbal region, was recently signed to Sony Music Entertainment. Calling herself "La Hija del Rap," she's rising in the scene as an artist with a style that is reminiscent of the genre's rebellious beginnings, all while adding her own fresh take, her native Spanish language, and authentic flow to the mix.
"With me being young, people are often like, 'Wow, her with that age, she's already with Sony?'" she tells Popsugar during an interview, reflecting on navigating the industry as a young teen. "But also because of my age and because I'm a girl, people don't take me into account,...

Identified as “The Mother of Rap” in Spanish, Melymel spits fire alongside Puerto Rican reggaeton royalty, Ivy Queen, in their brazen new trap single “Se Te Apago La Luz,” or “Turn Out the Light.” The song is the latest release off Melymel’s 2018 album, Dragon Queen, out now on Empire Records.
“This is not just a musical collaboration,” Melymel tells Rolling Stone over email. “It’s a collaboration between warriors that vibrate at the same frequency… The result is hip-hop and women’s empowerment in its most elegant expression. Long live self-taught alpha females.
