This is great news if you're a fan of Jimmy Henderson's action films, Jailbreak and The Prey. Yes, the team is still working on developing the sequel to Jailbreak, but, they're taking a break from that to film another action flick they're calling Ktv - Killing Time Violently. What a cool title. And the promo image envokes a sort of Die Hard vibe and if it is multi-level sort of affair, as the tall building in the background suggests, then a comparison to The Raid will be inescapable. On his first day of work, Mak, an estranged father gets caught up in a gang raid at a local club. Mak must use his skills as a reformed bar-brawler to find a way out and...

Considering the extremity of incarceration as a concept, it is no surprise that cinema has chosen to deal with the subject repeatedly, in all kinds of forms, from exploitative movies to documentaries and everything between. In this list we tried to include as many of these approaches as possible, from as many Asian countries as possible, in a list that includes movies that have at least a part of them taking place inside cells.
Without further ado, here are 20 great Asian movies revolving around prisons, in alphabetical order.

Trying to understand and give meaning to every metaphor might be a frustrating idea, but if instead of that, we let ourselves go with the story, we are carried by the feeling of dual nature in things in front of our eyes. “The Prey” takes the classic “The Most Dangerous Game” scenario for a spin in the Cambodian jungle. Centered on a wrongly jailed cop being stalked by cashed-up creeps who get their kicks by hunting humans, this survival thriller doesn’t bring anything significantly new to the table but the frequency and quality of its gunplay and martial arts combat should keep most action fans happy. Directed, edited and co-written by Italian expat Jimmy Henderson, whose 2017 prison smackdown “Jailbreak” marked him as a talent to watch and was snapped up by Netflix, “The Prey” debuted at the Busan Film Fetival in 2018 and will open in select North American virtual cinemas on Aug. 21. VOD streaming commences on August 25.
Trumpeted as Cambodia’s first million-dollar action movie, “The Prey” can’t match “Jailbreak” for sheer excitement but does suggest that with more original and ambitious material Henderson could become a real force in Asian genre cinema.

Will “Jailbreak 2” be a battle between two different styles of traditional Southeast Asian martial arts?
The question will be answered when the sequel hits the big screen! Though the exact release date is still unknown since it will only begin production in 2021.
The Hollywood Reporter brought word that director Jimmy Henderson will be back to helm the sequel, with Jean Paul Ly, Dara Our and Tharoth Sam returning to star.
Also joining them in the upcoming movie, which currently goes by the title “Jailbreak: Round 2”, are Indonesian martial arts stars Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman.
This won’t be the duo’s first gig together as they’ve both previously worked on Indonesia’s much praised “The Raid” franchise and Hollywood titles such as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”.
Their inclusion in the movie could signal the involvement of Indonesia’s Silat. It...

One of the most recent explosions of genre cinema in Asia is the swarm of releases coming from Cambodia, which is mainly due to the exploits of Jimmy Henderson. The Italian-born director has been at the forefront of the Khmer uprising, pushing for the quality of films to come out of the country to rival that of other countries, and much like his other efforts, this new fantasy/horror film carries on that high-quality of work.

Hanuman is a Cambodian action film directed and written by two Western filmmakers. The film tells a revenge story revolving around two brothers. They witness their father’s murder by a group of local gangsters when they were young. Twelve years later, the younger brother, Vicheat, becomes a traditional Cambodian martial art Bokator master. He wears a monkey mask and becomes a vigilante, trying to avenge his father’s death on his own. His brother, Srong, becomes a police officer with a wife and a daughter. While on the surface he has moved on, he is still collecting evidence, trying to put the mob boss in jail through a legal process.
The plot, as many have pointed out, is fairly generic. The director and writer claim that they are paying homage to Sergio Leone, and we can also see some tropes from other Asian martial arts film. For instance, after their father was murdered,...

Jimmy Henderson is a director or Italian descent, currently based in Cambodia. On the occasion of “Jailbreak” screening at Fantasia, we speak with him about his career, the path that led him from Italy to Cambodia, about the action scenes in the film, the cast, and many other topics.
Can you tell us about the path that led you from Milano to shooting movies in Cambodia?
I left Italy when I was 18 and moved to London. For the first few years in England I did odd jobs and I met a flat mate who introduced me to auteur and underground cinema. I started perceiving films under a different light and I became curious and passionate. So I decided I wanted to become a film director and I taught myself editing, cameras and writing. In 2009, I received a grant from the British Arts Council and I made my first film, a...

Gu Shangwei stars as Xin, a Chinese security officer working deep undercover in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. Jimmy Henderson's latest action offering, The Prey, will have its world premiere in Korea at the Busan Iff. Anticipating its premiere the production released a new character composite style poster today. It is more in keeping with the action genre, this composite style, and stands in stark contrast to the more photogenic teaser poster in the gallery below. The production will release a clip in the future we are told, so keep you eyes peeled for that too. Front and centre are left to right Jailbreak's Dy Sonita, our hero Gu Shangwei, and one of the most recognizable faces in South Asian cinema, Vithaya Pansringram (Only God Forgives and River). The trio is followed by a smattering of villains and suggestions of action...

Revolving around a rural fiend's pursuit for revenge against a middle-class professional whose self-righteous act landed him incarcerated, Indian director Amit Dubey's thriller could be readily described as Cape Fear on the Mekong. Produced by Jimmy Henderson, who has already made three genre movies (the comical action-thriller Hanuman, the horror-romance of The Forest Whispers and the martial-arts spectacle of Jailbreak) in Cambodia, Mind Cage also showcases the visual and technical opportunities the Southeast Asian country now offers to foreign and local filmmakers.
Having already made its debut at the Cambodia International Film Festival last March, Dubey's first feature will now...

News out of Cambodia is that the team behind local action flick and international hit Jailbreak are back in the saddle for a new film called The Prey. Jimmy Henderson will get behind the camera once again to shoot a script he wrote with his Jailbreak scribe Michael Hogdson and newcomer Kai Miller. Henderson will be joined by Argentinian cinematographer Lucas Gath (Shortwave and Suspiria 2018) behind the camera. One of Jailbreak's leading men, and that film's stunt choreographer, Jean-Paul Ly will design the action sequences for The Prey. Jailbreak producer Loy Te is once again leading the charge with Altered Vision Films and The Prey will be distributed by Kongchack Pictures. Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.
For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.

Witnessing the continued growth of the many talented in the stunt and screenfighting community has certainly proven rewarding. Martial arts exponent, actor Jean-Paul Ly (Now You See Me 2, Lucy, Doctor Strange) is especially an example given some of his recent efforts, including shortfilms like Colin Emmerson's 007-inspired Sapphire and Donnie Yen-style action nod, Dead End, the latter which I posted as my first entry here at ScreenAnarchy earlier this year. I personally pride myself on following projects like these as they've now led us to what now lies ahead for Ly and fellow actor and martial artist, Hanuman star Dara Our. Their new pairing for Hanuman helmer Jimmy Henderson's latest thrilling action follow-up, Jailbreak, is coming full speed ahead with its local buzz in...
