When it comes to Dickens adaptations, it helps to temper your expectations. The revered Victorian writer is perhaps the most frequently adapted novelist in history – but to what end? The results are wildly inconsistent: for every The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019) or Bleak House (2005), there are a dozen insipid Christmas Carols, or a handful of regrettable Oliver Twists. The BBC are once more throwing their (old-fashioned bowler) hat into the ring with a new six-episode screen version of Great Expectations. But how many more hats can this particular ring withstand?
Starring Dunkirk’s Fionn Whitehead as Pip, Shalom Brune-Franklin (Line of Duty) as Estella, and Oliva Colman as Miss Havisham, the new BBC series is a retelling of Dickens’s rags-to-riches bildungsroman – roughed up a bit with some distinctly modern sex and violence. Peaky Blinders scribe Steven Knight wrote the adaptation, the latest in a long line of Great Expectations adaptations for the screen.

The Last of Us star Nico Parker has defended the “inclusive” casting in HBO’s adaptation of the popular video game.
Parker, who is the daughter of actor Thandiwe Newton and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again director Ol Parker, appears in the post-apocalyptic drama as Sarah, the daughter of protagonist Joel (Pedro Pascal).
When the casting was announced, a small group of fans questioned the casting of Pascal, who hails from Chile, and biracial actor Parker, in roles that are white in the original game.
In a new interview, Parker said that, while she “understands” hardcore fans wanting the show to be true to the game, some critics were simply pushing back against a more diverse cast on screen.
“There are people for whom the game is incredibly important to them,” she told Yahoo! Entertainment.
“But when it comes from a place where it’s just a disdain toward any kind of inclusivity,...

HBO’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us premiered on Sunday (15 January) to rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.
As Louis Chilton wrote for The Independent, the series has broken the cardinal rule of video game adaptations – by actually being good.
The Last of Us – starring Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie) – follows the 2022 release of another beloved PlayStation classic adaptation, Uncharted.
Unlike The Last of Us, Sony Pictures’ Uncharted – starring Tom Holland as treasure hunter Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his partner in crime – was not received quite so positively.
“Tom Holland repeats his Spider-Man shtick in passionless video game adaptation,” read Clarisse Loughrey’s two-star review headline for The Independent.
Though the film mustered a more-than-respectable 402m (£329m) box office gross, fans were left disappointed at the result of what was supposed to be one of the best examples of the medium’s cinematic potential.

HBO’s live-action seriesThe Last of Us has set a new record with its Rotten Tomatoes score.
The show, which premieres in the US on Sunday 15 January and on Monday 16 January on Sky Atlantic in the UK, is adapted from the acclaimed 2013 video game of the same name.
Ahead of its debut, The Last of Us has been lavished with praise by many reviewers – including The Independent’s chief TV critic Nick Hilton.
On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the series currently boasts a glowing “fresh” score of 97 per cent positive reviews.
The score is especially noteworthy given the tepid reception video game adaptations usually receive. Several – such as 1993’s Super Mario Bros or 2003’s Alone in the Dark – have been cited as ranking among the worst films ever made.
In fact, while it’s possible the series’ ranking may drop a percentage point or two in the next week,...

Game of Thrones star Bella Ramsey has discussed her gender identity in a new interview.
The 19-year old actor, who also stars in HBO’s new post-apocalyptic drama series The Last of Us, that she was gender-fluid, and “couldn’t care less” about pronouns.
“I guess my gender has always been very fluid,” Ramsey told The New York Times. “Someone would call me ‘she’ or ‘her’ and I wouldn’t think about it. But I knew that if someone called me ‘he,’ it was a bit exciting.”
The actor explained that she would tick the box for “non-binary” when asked to name her gender on documents.
“I’m very much just a person,” she added. “Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like. But in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”
