Digital media companies are bullish on adaptations of young adult fiction, and Insurrection Media is no exception. The studio founded by former Fox exec Kiliaen Van Rensselaer has joined forces with Keshet Studios for a pilot based off The Dead Girls Detective Agency, a book written by Suzy Cox and published by HarperCollins.
The Dead Girls Detective Agency is a paranormal drama that revolves around a young woman who wakes up in a hotel room and learns she is dead. To escape purgatory, she must solve the mystery of her own murder.
While many of the deals Insurrection has inked since its 2015 launch aim to bring TV-quality entertainment to digital platforms, the Dead Girls Detective Agency pilot will be shopped to both digital and linear TV distributors, according to a press release. Since it launched earlier this year, Insurrection Media--led by former Fox exec Kiliaen Van Rensselaer--has piqued our interest by announcing several content deals with well-known producers. The digital-first studio has now added another partnership to its docket; it will team up with publisher HarperCollins to adapt several books into web series.
The deal between Insurrection and HarperCollins will cover a number of titles across multiple genres, but the first book series the two companies are eying is a young adult (Ya) trilogy called Mila 2.0, written by Debra Driza. Mila 2.0 is a science fiction tale centered around a woman who discovers she is actually the result of an experiment into artificial intelligence.
“We’re thrilled to see Mila 2.0 on the development slate with Insurrection,” said Suzanne Murphy, President and Publisher at HarperCollins Children’s Books, in a press release. “This is a great opportunity to further build the audience for this series,...

Since announcing its arrival in July 2015, Insurrection Media has been on the lookout for creative partners who can make enticing, TV-quality programming for distribution on digital and over-the-top platforms. As part of its search, the studio founded by former Fox exec Kiliaen Van Rensselaer has joined forces with the company behind one of TV’s biggest hits. It has struck a deal with Skybound Entertainment, which is led by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and producer David Alpert.
According to a press release, the deal between Skybound and Insurrection will cover “world-class genre series,” which the former company will develop and the latter will distribute. The deal also covers “the expansion of the intellectual property from the original series,” with licensed video games seen as a particular point of interest. A video game based on The Walking Dead became a surprise hit in 2012, garnering several Game of the Year honors along the way.

In July, former Fox exec Kiliaen Van Rensselaer launched Insurrection Media, a studio that plans to release TV-quality content on digital platforms. Now, two months later, Insurrection has brokered a first-look deal with a pair of talented producers. It has announced a multi-year pact with Jonathan Stern and Keith Quinn, co-producers of the hit 2012 web series Burning Love.
As part of the deal, Stern and Quinn will produce multiple series, which Insurrection will distribute across digital and over-the-top platforms. In doing so, the two producers will continue their partnership with van Rensselaer. Back when van Resselear was still at Fox, he teamed with Stern and Quinn for Filthy Sexy Teen$, a high school comedy that was picked up by Fullscreen earlier this year.
"The collaboration with Jon and Keith this past year reinforced my conviction that they are truly exceptional executive producers who have incredible instincts for finding daring, hilarious projects and nurturing creators,...
