Start watching Citizen Weiner and you may find its subject, Zack Weiner, looks familiar. A brief opening montage provides a sampling of what’s to come in Daniel Robbins’ documentary: late-night talk show hosts cracking wise about something Weiner did, various people with shocked expressions, and a conveniently blurred video at the center of it all. Those who can recall 2021’s New York City Council election might remember Weiner as the primary candidate who had a Bdsm video of himself leaked to the press during. It’s a recent blink-and-you’ll-miss-it piece of pop-culture history, from a time when most of us stayed inside and online, and Citizen Weiner does little to make this part of the past worth revisiting.

Overtime, a four-year-old digital upstart dedicated to covering all things sports -- and which clocks 1 billion monthly views among 23 million social followers across Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook -- is pushing further into esports.
The company, founded by entrepreneurs Dan Porter and Zack Weiner -- with backing from Spark Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Kevin Durant, and late NBA commissioner David Stern -- has acquired leading Fortnite organization Evade, whose players count a collective 600,000 social followers. At the same time, Overtime has formed a new esports team dubbed Overtime Gaming that will also serve as a new corporate unit for all things esports and gaming. Going forward, Evade and Team Overtime (the company’s existing Fornite team) will cease to exist, instead serving as a unified entity under the Overtime Gaming umbrella.
Overtime declined to comment on the financials of the deal.

It’s that time again. Another year has come to an end. Another decade, even. We defied the odds and live to fight another day, just like horror cinema proved itself – once again – a genre that continues to survive, adapt and thrive. Even at that, 2019 was an odd year for horror in that mainstream titles featuring household villains ended up leaving less of a mark than so many vastly different indies (in my opinion). If anything, 2019 was a reminder of the tremendous diversity among horror subgenres that offer a cornucopia of terror. Take your pick, choose your fate and dive into Part I of our top horror movies of 2019.

Pledge is a recent indie horror gem from director/writer team Daniel Robbins and Zack Weiner, who were friends in high school and went on to make low-budget horror movies together, starting with Uncaged, a teen werewolf horror thriller from 2016. The film follows three hapless college kids as they attempt to pledge for a highly exclusive […] The post Horror Business: Indie Horror Filmmaking Lessons from Pledge appeared first on Dread Central.

Independent horror doesn’t need to go overboard when it comes to a premise. Just set the scare for something scary and then let the brutality commence. Simple is rarely a bad thing. The new indie fright flick Pledge has certainly figured out the secret sauce. A horror film set during fraternity pledging? Very little sounds more terrifying. So, watching young men suffer while trying to join a club may bring back fond memories for some, for plenty of others it sounds like literal torture, something the film just takes to the next level. The result is something slick and very compelling. The film is a horror/thriller hybrid set on a college campus. Justin (Zachery Byrd), Ethan (Phillip Andre Botello), and David (Zack Weiner) are a trio of nerdy friends looking to rush a fraternity. As they get rejected from frat after frat, despair on the part of Justin and Ethan sets in,...

[Note: To talk about either of the films below too much would spoil the wonderful delights within, so the following reviews are as vague as possible whilst touching on some salient points in both films]
Pledge
Stars: Phillip Andre Botello, Erica Boozer, Zachery Byrd, Cameron Cowperthwaite, Aaron Dalla Villa, Jean-Louis Droulers, Joe Gallagher, Jesse Pimentel, Melanie Rothman, Zachary Weiner | Written by Zachary Weiner | Directed by Daniel Robbins
Pledge follows three freshmen pursuing what they think is the ideal college experience. But despite their best efforts, the goofy and likeable David (screenwriter Zack Weiner), Ethan (Phillip Andre Botello) and Justin (Zachary Byrd) get the cold shoulder from the campus frats. They’re ready to throw in the social towel when they meet the gorgeous Rachel (Erica Boozer), who invites them to a party at a mansion in the country. What could possibly go wrong?
Films about fraternities never end well… Well, those that Aren’T comedies that is! If it’s a comedy then you can usual guarantee some kind of new status quo, a nice wrap up that sees everyone “get along” for the greater good.

Overtime, the sports digital-media startup whose backers include NBA star Kevin Durant, has recruited its first chief content officer: Marc Kohn, previously head of programming for Barstool Sports and Turner Sports’ Bleacher Report.
Kohn’s hire by the year-and-half-old Brooklyn company, which has focused on covering high-school athletes and teams, is part of Overtime’s strategy to boost its longer-form content slate and expand distribution deals.
Other execs Overtime has hired in the past several weeks include Alex Grant, head of sales and brand partnerships, who’s a former Snap and Twitter exec; chief strategy officer Anis Rashid, formerly with Wme Ventures and Goldman Sachs; and head of production Dave Zigerelli.
“As Overtime focuses on building the next great sports network, we are fortunate to bring on board folks like these, who have world-class experience but are still hungry and creative in reimagining how we cover sports,” co-founder and CEO Dan Porter said.

When it comes to werewolf movies, so much excitement relies on the transformation. An American Werewolf In London still stands as one of the all-time achievements in practical wolf-itizing, and newer titles, such as Wolf Cop, have had their go at flesh-ripping, hairy mutations. So how does a low, Low budget affair like Daniel Robbins’ Uncaged stand a chance against more well-endowed genre entries? Don’t expect wicked effects work sans an ending that goes for broke (and even then, the wolves look a bit Halloweenish), but Robbins’ scrappy demeanor continually claws and scratches towards a meaty conclusion. Does it succeed? Well, that’s the million-dollar question (a question far too expensive for this film’s meager budget to answer).
